From Learning to Independent Research – Bachelor's Theses

As part of their bachelor’s thesis, students have the opportunity to work independently on scientific research questions. Topics may arise directly from ongoing research projects within the program, thereby allowing students to contribute to current applied research.

Depending on the research question, bachelor’s theses may – for example – involve experimental work in the fields of microbiology and molecular biology, biofilm analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, environmental and water analysis, or the statistical evaluation of complex biological and diagnostic datasets.

Through close collaboration with clinical and scientific partner institutions, bachelor’s theses can also be completed outside of CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. This allows students to focus their work on a specific field that aligns with their personal and professional interests.

Possible topics and collaborations include, among others, the fields of hygiene, microbiology, and environmental medicine at the Medical University of Graz, as well as hematology, hematological research, and pathology in Klagenfurt. Additional topics may arise from current collaborations and research projects.

The bachelor’s thesis thus offers the opportunity to apply the skills acquired during the degree program under real-world research and laboratory conditions, to deepen one’s understanding of scientific work, and at the same time to gain insights into potential future career paths in diagnostics, research, and development.

Research in the Biomedical Science Program

Research and evidence-based practice are essential components of biomedical analytics. The program combines scientific inquiry with modern methods of laboratory analysis, enabling students not only to learn about current developments in diagnostics and research but also to contribute to them firsthand.

A significant portion of the program’s research activities is anchored in the Environment, Health, and Applied Bioanalytics (EHaB) research group. Research focuses range from environmental microbiology, water quality, and One Health to biofilms and microbial communities, as well as applied bioanalytics and the development of new biological and microbial indicators. Modern microbiological, molecular biological, biochemical, and mass spectrometric methods are combined in this process.
