International Internship Abroad

CU Carinthia University supports students and graduates with Erasmus+ internships abroad. This page provides information on eligibility requirements, funding duration, the application process, required documents, inclusion support and finding an internship.

Erasmus+ Funding

ERASMUS+ offers financial support to students who complete an internship in another European country lasting between 2 and 12 months. It does not matter whether the internship is mandatory or voluntary. Furthermore, the amount the student earns at the internship site – if any – is not taken into account when determining funding.

Depending on the destination country, the grant amounts range from € 540 to € 640 per month (as of 2022). Students can apply to the International Relations Office for additional funding for a language course.

Erasmus+ participants with a disability or chronic illness may apply for an Erasmus+ special grant in addition to the regular Erasmus+ mobility grant for study or internship stays, or for professional development stays abroad.

When preparing for your Erasmus+ stay, please inform us of your situation and provide an estimate of the additional costs you expect to incur during your Erasmus+ mobility or while in the host country.

You can find more information here.

Procedure and Documents

It is the student’s responsibility to find a suitable internship position. Faculty members, the program coordinators and the International Relations Office are, of course, happy to assist.

We recommend reviewing the Experience Reports stored on the I drive (I:\ZSB\International\Experience Reports). These are feedback reports from students who have already completed internships abroad. In addition, online databases such as AIESEC, IAESTE,erasmusintern, or http://www.praxisnetwork.eu/ can be very helpful.

Once you have secured an internship position, you can apply for the Erasmus+ grant.

You must meet the following requirements:

  • Confirmation of an internship position – this can be a required internship or a voluntary internship recognized by CU Carinthia University.
  • Duration of stay between 2 and 12 months.
  • The internship must take place within the European Union, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, the Republic of Macedonia, or Turkey.
  • All required documents must be submitted to the International Relations Office by the deadline.

Application Process for the Erasmus+ Scholarship:

You can find all the necessary documents and detailed information in our Moodle course. You can obtain the exact dates for registration from the International Relations Office. Please send an email to international(at)cuas.at to receive access.
The International Relations Office requires the complete and signed documents at least 6 weeks before the start of your internship in order to nominate you for the scholarship in a timely manner.
The Erasmus Office is responsible for disbursing the grant. Once your application has been approved, it will send you a nomination email (check your CU email address!). The first installments will only be disbursed after you have signed and returned the contract included in this email.

Under the Erasmus+ program, it is also possible to apply for financial support after graduation. This is possible, for example, if you complete an internship or trainee program after graduation. The same requirements as for an Erasmus+ internship must be met (timely submission of documents, the internship must take place in a participating partner country, minimum duration). However, the following additional factors must be taken into account:

  • The nomination for Erasmus+ funding must be submitted while you are still a student.
  • The internship must be completed within 12 months of graduation.
  • During each academic cycle (Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree), students are entitled to a total of 12 months of Erasmus+ funding. If Erasmus+ funding has already been granted, the funding period is reduced. Example: If funding was received during the Bachelor’s Program for a study abroad period (3 months) and an internship abroad (4 months), then 5 months of funding remain for the graduate internship.
  • The duration of the graduate internship is reduced by the number of months already used for an Erasmus internship and/or study abroad period during the last completed academic cycle (Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree).

Sozial.EZA Internship Program – Africa, Asia, Latin America

If you’re interested in a professional internship in a country of the Global South, you have the opportunity to participate in the Austria-wide “Sozial.EZA Internship Program.” This program includes thorough preparation and follow-up to address the specific challenges and learning experiences that arise in the context of development cooperation and in the field of international social work. Coordination and supervision are provided by the OSECA Office [See Research] (Office for Scientific and Educational Cooperation with African Partners), which is based at CU Carinthia University.

Financial support is available for EZA internships.

FAQ

Where can I find an overview of the challenges before and during an internship abroad?

The Study Abroad Handbook summarizes the most important information and provides answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Are there any reports or additional information about internship opportunities?

CU Carinthia University students fill out a report after completing their study abroad program. The report includes information about their internship placement and daily life abroad. You can find the reports on the I drive at I:\ZSB\International\Experience Reports.

What options are available for financial assistance?

You can find information about scholarships and other financial aid  →  “Grants and Scholarships.”

Am I covered while abroad?

Before going abroad, you should carefully review your insurance policies: What does the ÖH insurance cover? What supplemental insurance have you already purchased? Are there any co-insurance policies? You can then decide which supplemental insurance policies you still need. For more information on health insurance, click here.

In addition, we recommend that all students take out supplemental insurance for the duration of their stay abroad.
