Survey on Starting University – Class of 2024

Survey Details

First-year students in all Degree programs at CU Carinthia University had the opportunity to participate in the annual first-semester student survey in January 2025. A total of 249 first-semester students participated (response rate: 22%). The survey focused on the following aspects:

  • Choice of program and information sources
  • Satisfaction with the application process
  • Expectations related to their studies and satisfaction with their academic experience

Key Findings

Why did you decide to study at CU Carinthia University? For the majority of students, the specific Degree program or the right course offerings were the decisive factors in their choice of study. Proximity to home, the program’s strong practical focus and good career opportunities also played an essential role in their decision. Part-time students cited their professional development and personal growth as the main criteria for their choice of program. Students primarily obtained information from the CU website, followed by recommendations from their social circles.

After several years of professional experience, the majority of Bachelor’s Degree students – 62% – began their studies at CU Carinthia University. 21% began their studies immediately after graduating from high school. 40% of Master’s Degree students had completed a Bachelor’s Degree at CU Carinthia University and 44% began a Master’s Degree program immediately after completing their first Degree. Career advancement and professional development were cited as the main reasons for pursuing a Master’s Degree.

More than half (55%) of the participating students are employed. Broken down by degree level, 49% of Bachelor’s Degree students and 75% of Master’s Degree students work alongside their studies. 60% of students in part-time Degree programs are (very) satisfied with the flexibility and compatibility with their jobs.

86% of first-year students rated the guidance and support during the application process as (very) good. For more than half (53%) of the applicants, the oral admissions interview reinforced their decision to begin their studies at CU Carinthia University. Students found it particularly positive to have the opportunity to clarify any uncertainties and ask questions during the interview. 95% of applicants were able to use the online application portal without any complications.

For over 50% of first-year students, the quality of teaching and academic programs, as well as the program’s relevance to their future careers and practical experience, are top priorities in their studies. According to student feedback, expectations in these areas were largely met. More than three-quarters of students consider the academic requirements in the first semester to be appropriate and more than two-thirds feel that the workload is just right. 21% of first-semester students feel that the ratio of ECTS credits to workload is too high. The use of ChatGPT is prevalent among both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree students, with 63% using it for research and information gathering. Although AI tools are used to support their studies, 42% of first-year students rate their proficiency in using them as moderate. About 43% of participants are satisfied with their studies, particularly with their academic success. While 29% often or sometimes think about dropping out, 71% rarely or never have this thought. 14 % would consider changing their field of study. Overall, 87% of first-year students reported that they have settled in very well to well during their studies at CU Carinthia University.

Survey on the Study & Work Program

Survey Details

During the summer semester of 2024, a survey was conducted on the Study & Work program at CU Carinthia University. Study & Work is an exclusive job placement service offered by CU Carinthia University that provides students with an outstanding opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge directly into practice. During the winter semester, students apply online to one or more companies; CU collects the applications and forwards them to the companies. The companies then contact suitable candidates and hire them on a part-time or minor employment basis.

All students at CU Carinthia University who applied for the Study & Work program during the relevant period (Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree) were invited to participate in the survey. A total of 66 students participated in the survey, representing a response rate of 53%. Participants were able to provide feedback on the following aspects:

  • Initial contact with the company
  • Application process & job offer
  • Satisfaction with the Study & Work initiative

Results

As part of the Study & Work process, 88% of participants applied to at least one company. 62% were contacted by at least one company. Overall, more than one-third of survey participants found a job through the initiative. The majority of participants (just under 52%) stated that the Study & Work program positively influenced their decision to study at CU Carinthia University.
