Employee Benefits

It is very important to us to actively and effectively integrate new colleagues into the organization and make them feel welcome. Employees from the various departments, as well as the Human Resources team, are there to support them as they take their first steps.

To best meet the needs of both the employer and the employees, we offer a flexible flex-time model, the option to work from home, and a partial-retirement program.

As a university, lifelong learning is an integral part of our core mission and is actively promoted. It is not only our students who are encouraged to grow here; our employees are also supported in this regard. During annual performance reviews with supervisors, specific measures can be discussed and planned.
Another option is “staff mobility” or “teaching mobility” at our partner universities.

We take workplace health management very seriously. We offer our employees the opportunity to receive seasonal vaccinations twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Once a year, we hold a Health Day on the Villach campus.

CU Sports. Education in Motion!
Students, staff and alumni who love to be active and are passionate about sports – and who want to participate in athletic activities together, ranging from recreational to elite sports – will find the perfect home at the sports club.

For us at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, achieving a good work-life balance is important. Our employees are able to easily integrate our offerings into their daily family and professional lives. CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences is also certified as a “family-friendly university.”

It is important to us that our employees remain healthy and safe and are protected in their day-to-day work. Our safety officer and occupational health physician regularly visit all campuses to ensure the best possible preventive care.

The issue of sustainability has been even more firmly embedded in our university’s strategy and plays a key role. It involves the deliberate interplay of environmental, social and economic factors. Everything we do as a university is aimed at integrating ethical, moral and environmental considerations into our daily university life.

In addition to teaching and research, our core mission includes contributing to the development of our society as a university. We therefore see it as our responsibility to promote and actively engage in the transfer of knowledge to and with society at all levels.

In the lecture series “#facetoface: Personalities on Campus,” we therefore regularly invite people to our university who, through their personal stories, life experiences and expertise, shed light on current topics and present them to an interested public for discussion.

Research and development play a key role in transforming broad academic knowledge into practical applications and in fostering collaboration between companies and universities.

Research priorities are grouped by discipline and across disciplines and addressed thematically in 15 research groups and 5 research centers.

The CU Research team provides support to researchers in this area.

Since its inception, CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences has focused on fostering a cultural climate in which diversity and common ground, exchange and dialogue, inclusion and equal participation – even across disciplinary boundaries – play a major role. In 2005, the Committee on Equal Treatment was established to help give this initiative momentum and direction.

The Committee on Equal Treatment brings together staff members from all academic and administrative areas of the university to carry out substantive work on gender and diversity, which – driven in part by teaching and research – has a positive impact on the structures of CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences.

The career model illustrates development opportunities for research staff. Starting with the WIPA – a project assistant position held during a Master’s program – it is possible, upon completion of one’s studies, to become a research assistant at the junior researcher level. The model shows the sequence of career steps and the requirements for further qualification.

Part-time instructors as defined in Section 7 of the FHG (as amended on January 1, 2021) are individuals who

  • are employed exclusively in teaching,
  • teach no more than 6 semester-week hours, and
  • are engaged in another form of gainful employment subject to full social security contributions (whether self-employed or employed) (i.e., not engaged in marginal employment, not job-seeking, and not on leave of any kind, including maternity leave) or are retired.

It is not possible to work as a part-time lecturer on a fee basis.

In accordance with statutory provisions and current case law in Austria, lecturers and instructors who teach more than one semester hour per week (SWS) per semester are subject to income tax and social security contributions (as they are considered employees, § 25 EStG). Consequently, part-time lecturers at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences are registered with the ÖGK for the duration of the semester (classified as “free employees” under labor law but as “genuine employees” for tax purposes).

Teaching assignments are therefore awarded exclusively to natural persons. Consequently, contracting legal entities, including partnerships, is legally precluded (see also VwGH 28 March 2012, 2009/08/0010). The agreed-upon fee must therefore be transferred exclusively to the bank account specified by the lecturer, which is held by him or her as a natural person.

As a part-time lecturer, you will contribute your professional expertise and practical knowledge from your primary occupation to application-oriented teaching. Qualifications are demonstrated by a relevant academic degree and several years of relevant professional experience. A passion for sharing knowledge, teaching skills, and experience in the classroom are required.

You can find even more details about the diversity in our day-to-day work or students' daily lives on our other channels.
