Policy Brief - Interreg Italy-Austria project INDIALPS
March 17, 2026
CU Carinthia University has published a policy brief on the Interreg Italy-Austria project INDIALPS, an initiative dedicated to fostering innovative and sustainable tourism in the Alpe-Adria region. Bringing together Dobratsch Nature Park, Prealpi Giulie Nature Park, and Triglav National Park, the project promotes cross-border cooperation to balance tourism flows while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of these unique landscapes.
The policy brief presents key results from a multi-method visitor monitoring approach implemented in Dobratsch Nature Park. It demonstrates how data collected through visitor counting technologies, outdoor and fitness apps, and surveys can support science-based management decisions, helping to address challenges such as overcrowding and uneven tourism distribution.
Based on this analysis, a set of recommendations for visitor monitoring, guidance, and management has been developed. These emphasize the importance of continuous, long-term monitoring as well as strengthened cross-border cooperation practices.
