Our research centers
The five research centers at CU Carinthia University combine applied research with teaching and practical experience. Their areas of focus range from 3D printing, robotics, and microelectronics to gerontology, biodiversity, and digital laboratory and learning concepts.

ADMiRE – Additive Manufacturing, Intelligent Robotics, and Embedded Sensors
We are a research center at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, conducting research in additive manufacturing, intelligent robotics, and embedded sensor systems. In our work, we integrate materials, design, processes, and applications with a strong focus on sustainability.
Our primary focus is on material extrusion-based 3D printing using polymer filaments and pellets. Among other things, we develop smart prosthetics and orthotics, smart insoles, new applications for robotics and 3D printing, as well as sustainable materials and manufacturing processes.
We translate research into practical applications and work closely with industry and relevant user groups.

CIME – Carinthia Institute for Microelectronics
CIME is a center of excellence at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences dedicated to research and development in the field of integrated electronic systems. We conduct research on microelectronics, integrated circuits, and sensor systems, as well as solutions for wireless and wired communication.
For more than 20 years, we have been working with industry partners and on national and European research projects to develop cutting-edge technologies. Our goal is to serve as a competent research partner in developing innovative solutions and translating research findings into practical applications.
The close connection between research and teaching is supported by the master’s program in Integrated Systems and Circuits Design (ISCD) as well as by PhD collaborations with other universities.

IARA – Institute for Applied Research on Aging
IARA is the Center of Excellence at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences for applied research on aging and the challenges and opportunities of an aging society. We develop practical and interdisciplinary solutions that help improve the social, health, and economic circumstances of older adults.
In doing so, we collaborate with partners from various fields and actively involve relevant stakeholders in our research. We make our findings accessible to policymakers, the business community, and civil society, while also integrating them into the practice-oriented teaching at CU University of Applied Sciences Carinthia.

ICEB – Interdisciplinary Center for Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity
The ICEB is an interdisciplinary research center at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences dedicated to making biodiversity measurable. We develop and test new technologies and methods to record and monitor species, habitats, and ecosystem services.
In doing so, we combine scientific expertise with cutting-edge technologies from robotics, sensor technology, artificial intelligence, information and communication technologies, and data science. This leads to innovative solutions for one of the central challenges of our future: the protection and understanding of our biological diversity.

myLAB – Modern Labs for Hands-On Learning
The myLAB research group at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences develops innovative concepts for practical engineering education. The focus is on modern, flexible, and personalized lab environments that combine theory with hands-on experience.
A particular focus is on online labs that enable self-directed and experimental learning–regardless of time and place. Via the Internet, students and learners can conduct real-world experiments and gain practical experience.
In doing so, we are exploring new forms of digital and hands-on education and developing lab and learning concepts for current topics such as hydrogen technologies, the circular economy, and digital transformation. In this way, we are creating new opportunities for modern engineering education and lifelong learning.
