How technical is the program?
Civil engineering is a technical degree program with a strong foundation in the natural sciences. Mathematics and mechanics help you understand structures, calculate load-bearing systems, and develop new technical solutions. The theoretical principles are consistently linked to practical applications. The focus on mathematics is concentrated in the first two semesters and comprises a total of 10 ECTS credits. Experts and upper-level students provide additional support in classes and tutorials.
How practical is the program?
Theoretical knowledge is reinforced in the Bachelor’s program in Civil Engineering through lab exercises and regular field trips. The first two semesters are designed to build and solidify your understanding of engineering principles.
In the second semester, you’ll work on your own STEM project, where you’ll practice the practical application of mathematics and mechanics. After that, you’ll complete a project each semester that builds on your current level of knowledge. In addition, subject-specific field trips may be organized, which are often directly integrated into projects. In the fifth semester, you’ll gain practical experience through a professional internship at a company.
What career opportunities will I have after I graduate?
With a bachelor’s degree, a wide range of career paths in the construction industry are open to you. For example, you can work in design firms, in structural engineering, with civil engineers, or at building departments. Potential areas of work include building construction, civil engineering, transportation and road construction, tunnel construction, geotechnical engineering, and building materials technology—both in planning and on the construction site.
The bachelor’s program provides you with a broad technical foundation for these fields. At the same time, the degree enables you to pursue a master’s program and lays the groundwork for further career paths, including senior management roles, civil engineering, or a doctoral program.
How does the admission process work?
The admissions process consists of a personal interview—either online or in person. Together with the program directors, you’ll discuss whether the program is a good fit for you. The focus will be on your interest in civil engineering, your creativity, your technical understanding, and your ability to work in a team. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and receive direct feedback.
Why study at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences?
At the Spittal campus, you’ll study in a personal and welcoming atmosphere alongside students from the architecture and sustainable real estate management programs. Interdisciplinary exchange, modern infrastructure, and numerous networking opportunities create an inspiring learning environment. Dedicated student spaces and plenty of opportunities to organize events, meet up, and exchange ideas further strengthen the student community on campus. At the same time, the region offers ideal conditions for anyone who wants to combine nature and sports with their studies—with Lake Millstatt and the local mountain, the Goldeck, right around the corner, there’s something for everyone when it comes to leisure activities.
Can I gain international experience while I´m in university?
Yes, thanks to CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences’ membership in the European University ACE2EU, you have access to international courses, research projects, and a Europe-wide network. In addition, you can spend a semester abroad, participate in short-term learning programs or summer schools, or complete your professional internship abroad. For a semester abroad, partner universities are available in countries including Germany, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Lithuania, and Romania. English language skills are integrated into about 20% of the curriculum and prepare you for potential stays abroad.
Even beyond traditional study abroad programs, the degree program offers international perspectives: In recent years, numerous activities have been organized in Central Asia, Namibia, Chile, and Argentina. For example, several students worked for an Austrian construction company in Chile, where they helped build one of the world’s largest hydroelectric power plants.
How challenging is the program?
The program is technically challenging but designed with a practical focus. The goal is not to memorize formulas, but to understand technical concepts and make well-informed decisions. For example, you’ll learn to assess whether a solution is safe, sustainable, and cost-effective. Through numerous hands-on assignments, you’ll be prepared step by step for the demands of the construction industry.
Preparatory and bridge courses help you get started and provide targeted opportunities to refresh your existing knowledge. If you’re interested, a technical course can be offered at the Bauakademie in Klagenfurt.
Do I need a strong background in math or physics?
Mathematics and physics form the foundation of civil engineering. By earning your Matura, you’ll have the necessary background knowledge for your degree program. If you’d like to brush up on your knowledge before starting your studies, you can take an online refresher course in mathematics, which will make the transition to advanced mathematics easier. The course is particularly suitable if some time has passed since you graduated from high school or if you are coming from a preparatory program.
What is the difference between civil engineering and architecture?
Architects design buildings and develop spatial concepts. Civil engineers ensure that these structures function properly from a technical standpoint, can be built safely, and will stand the test of time. They deal with structural systems, building materials, construction processes, and the planning and implementation of building construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure projects. Both disciplines work closely together and complement each other in the construction process.
What software will I learn to use during my studies?
During your studies, you will work with professional software solutions that are also used in the construction industry. These include, among others,
- MATHLAB and MathCAD for mathematics and mechanics
- AutoCAD and ArchiCAD for technical design
- REVIT and Grasshopper for structural design
- Excel and Python for data programming
- MS Project and ITWO for data analysis and project management
How does the internship work?
In the fifth semester, you’ll complete a 12-week professional internship. During this time, you’ll work, for example, at engineering firms, on construction sites, or at government agencies, and apply the knowledge you’ve acquired so far in a practical setting. The internship helps you become familiar with different professional fields and plan your future career path in a targeted manner.
What are the advantages of the Spittal location?
The Spittal campus offers modern infrastructure, free access to professional software, and close ties to the construction industry. Spittal is also the birthplace of STRABAG and home to numerous companies in the construction sector. Thanks to its proximity to the Alpe-Adria region, you’ll also benefit from international field trips and excellent transportation connections to Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich.
Is a master´s degree necessary?
A master's degree is not strictly required. However, if you want to take on leadership roles, start your own business, or further specialize in your field, a master's degree is a valuable addition and opens up additional career opportunities.
