Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about the curriculum, technical requirements, sustainability, part-time study, and your career prospects. If your question isn’t listed here, we’d be happy to assist you personally.

Who is the Green Electronics degree program intended for?

This degree program is designed for anyone interested in electronics, technical systems, and sustainable technology development. An interest in scientific inquiry, creativity, and logical thinking provide a solid foundation. A technical high school education is not required.

What is Green Electronics?

Green Electronics combines electronics with energy efficiency and sustainability. You will learn to analyze electronic systems and develop your own designs. In addition to technical functionality, the program also takes into account resource conservation, environmental impact, and the entire life cycle of electronic products.

What will I learn during my studies?

Among other things, you will study analog and digital circuits, sensor technology, embedded systems, signal processing, and control engineering. Other topics include semiconductor physics, printed circuit board design, and the modeling and simulation of electronic systems. You’ll learn to analyze, develop, and implement circuits and electronic applications in practice.

What is the difference between Green Electronics and Green Mechatronics?

Green Electronics focuses more on electronic circuits, semiconductor technology, sensor technology, embedded systems, and the development of energy-efficient devices. Green Mechatronics combines mechanics, electronics, and software, with a stronger emphasis on robotics, automation, dynamic systems, and electric drives and actuators.

Do I need any prior technical knowledge?

No, the program is open to graduates of various types of high schools. What matters is an interest in technology and a willingness to engage intensively with mathematical, scientific, and technical issues. Preparatory courses in mathematics, computer science, and physics make it easier to get started.

Do I need to know how to program already?

No, programming skills are not required. During the program, you'll learn the basics of computer science and programming. Later on, you'll use software in areas such as microcontrollers, embedded systems, simulations, and technical data processing.

What role does sustainability play in college?

Sustainability is a central theme throughout the entire program. You’ll explore energy-efficient systems, eco-design, the circular economy, and life cycle assessment. Through this, you’ll learn to plan, evaluate, and further develop technical products in a way that conserves resources throughout their entire life cycle.

Is the program practical?

Yes, in modern labs and projects, you’ll apply your theoretical knowledge directly in a practical setting. You’ll experiment with electronic circuits, sensors, and embedded systems, develop your own solutions, and work with models and simulations. A professional internship is also part of the program.

Can I study Green Electronics while working?

Yes, the Green Electronics program is offered in German in both full-time and part-time formats. Starting in the fall of 2026, a full-time program taught in English will also be available. All programs are held on the Villach campus. In the part-time program, classes begin on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:50 p.m. and on Fridays at 4:00 p.m. On Saturdays, classes are held in blocks until 4:00 p.m.

How long does the program last, and what degree will I receive?

The bachelor's program lasts six semesters and comprises 180 ECTS credits. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the academic degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc).

Can I get credit for courses I took at an HTL?

Yes, graduates of relevant HTL programs can enter the second or third semester. These include electronics and technical computer science, electrical engineering, mechatronics, automation technology, and IT networking. Admission to the second semester is possible without entrance exams. For admission to the third semester, a grade point average of 2.0 or higher on the last two annual report cards is required, as well as entrance exams in mathematics, computer science, and signals and systems.

What career opportunities does this degree program offer?

After completing your degree, you can work in fields such as electronics and electrical engineering, automation, semiconductor technology, measurement and sensor technology, process engineering, control engineering, or environmental engineering. Typical responsibilities include the development, analysis, and optimization of electronic systems, energy-efficient devices, and technical applications.
