A 3.5-hour trip–and not a single moment of regret

Gabriel Vigg, graduate of the bachelor’s program in mechanical engineering

I regularly commuted 3.5 hours each way to Villach and still successfully completed my degree. With motivation, good planning, and the right environment, a lot is possible.

For Gabriel Vigg, it was always clear that he wanted to further his academic education–without interrupting his professional career. That’s why he chose the part-time Bachelor’s program in Mechanical Engineering at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. Combining work and study was the ideal way for him to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

His path, however, was anything but ordinary. After starting a mechanical engineering degree in Vienna, he initially decided to enter the workforce directly in research and development and later switched to project management. Yet his desire to earn a college degree remained. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he finally made the decision to take that step.

Juggling a full-time job, his studies, and regular commutes from South Tyrol to Villach was particularly challenging for Gabriel. “Of course, there were days when it was exhausting. But with good planning and the right motivation, the program was very manageable.”

What he remembers most is the extraordinary sense of camaraderie within the study group. Mutual support, group study sessions, and open dialogue with the instructors made his time as a student a special experience. “Sometimes it was simply having a drink together after a long lecture that gave everyone a fresh burst of energy.”

Looking back, Gabriel describes the program as extremely enriching, both academically and personally. His advice to future students is therefore: “Take advantage of the opportunities to interact with your classmates and speak openly with the instructors. The program demands dedication, but you won’t be left to navigate it alone.”
