College, a move, and many opportunities: Jana’s journey from Vorarlberg to Villach

Jana Entstrasser, Business Psychology Student

What I particularly appreciate about the university is the personalized admissions process and the excellent, prompt communication. The close contact with the professors makes studying easier, because you get quick support whenever you have questions or problems. The courses and student events are also very well organized. I especially enjoy the great events with companies and for students–such as the Meet & Match or the Study Lounge events. I also find the strong practical focus of the program very helpful, because it allows you to learn early on how this knowledge is applied in the professional world.

Why did you decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Psychology at the School of Management / the Faculty of Economics & Management at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Villach?

I chose a bachelor’s program in Business Psychology because I find it incredibly fascinating to apply psychological knowledge to a business context. Psychological processes influence business behavior in various areas, such as purchasing decisions, managing employees, and even marketing. This also means that the program opens the door to many exciting career paths, ranging from human resources management to market research, marketing, and change management, all the way to coaching and consulting. Through my studies, I’m gaining knowledge that enables me to positively influence people and support them in their development.

There were several factors that spoke in favor of CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and, consequently, the Villach campus. I’m originally from Vorarlberg and moved here to Villach to live in a student dorm for my studies. CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences impressed me with its online presence and the organization of the entire admissions process. Even before my studies began, I had the opportunity to explore the campus, and thanks to the generous support of our program director, Mr. Fenzl, all my questions were answered immediately. I felt welcome right away. I’m also impressed by the combination of theory and practice. The School of Management (SOM) works closely with partners from the business world and enables students to gain valuable experience even while they’re still in school. Many professors come directly from the business world and provide students with hands-on learning. Furthermore, the Villach region combines many companies with stunning scenery, which made my move to Villach much more enjoyable.

What interests you most, or what do you particularly like about the Bachelor’s program in Business Psychology at the School of Management / the Faculty of Economics & Management at CU University of Applied Sciences Carinthia in Villach?

See point 1.
In addition, I think it’s great that the professors, who teach multiple degree programs within the same module, still tailor their instruction to each specific track. This gives us the chance to integrate our psychological knowledge even into modules that, at first glance, don’t seem to allow for it. This encourages us to rethink what we’ve learned and apply it right away.
Plus, our program director, Mr. Fenzl, is a huge support. He cares deeply about our well-being and academic performance, and together we’re always planning new team-building activities.

What do you particularly like about the overall environment at the School of Management / the Faculty of Economics & Management at CU University of Applied Sciences Carinthia in Villach?

The program at the university is exceptionally well-organized–you can tell right from the admissions process and especially at the start of your studies (active start). The course schedule is set, and you’re automatically registered for exams. This saves students time and effort. The course content is divided into clearly structured modules, which helps you keep track of everything and usually allows you to complete your degree within the standard period of study.
A particular highlight is the strong practical focus. There’s a mandatory internship and many application-oriented courses. Many instructors come from the professional field themselves and bring valuable work experience to the classroom. In addition, there are numerous opportunities to establish early connections with the professional world–for example, through networking events or partnerships with companies (such as the “Meet & Match” fair).

The program’s international focus is also a major advantage. CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences offers the opportunity to spend a semester abroad and provides students with extensive support through preparatory courses and contact with the International Relations Office. Many courses are offered in English, and there are also degree programs taught entirely in English. This is excellent preparation for the international job market.
Furthermore, the smaller class sizes create a personal learning environment. You get to know the faculty and your fellow students, and it’s easier to approach professors personally and ask questions. In addition, we students benefit from a wide range of services, such as career counseling and resume reviews.

What further educational or career path are you aiming for after completing your bachelor’s degree in Business Psychology?

A Bachelor’s degree in Business Psychology opens many doors for me. I’m still figuring out whether I’ll pursue a Master’s degree in a specialized field or something similar, or whether I’ll enter the workforce. My degree program is preparing me perfectly for both paths. Thanks to the wide range of modules and insights into various areas of business, my interests become clearer over time, and I can then pursue them further.

Do you have any tips or advice for students starting their bachelor’s program?

Specifically regarding business psychology: Essentially, you’re studying business, which means every student must first learn the fundamentals of economics. It’s only as the program progresses that the focus shifts to the major’s specific area of specialization. This can be challenging at first, but it’s worth it because later on, you’ll be able to optimally combine your psychological expertise with the fundamentals you’ve learned.

General advice for a bachelor’s program (at CU University of Carinthia): You should take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and stay curious. The professors and staff are always open to answering questions. There are also numerous events that allow students to get to know one another better.
Students who do not live nearby should start looking for housing early on; they’ll receive support from the university and the Student Blog in this process.
