Study content and requirements
for the Civil Engineering degree program
What should you bring to the program?
For the bachelor’s program in Civil Engineering, you should have an interest in technology, the natural sciences, and construction. Curiosity, analytical thinking, and a passion for understanding complex concepts and developing solutions as part of a team are the best prerequisites for a successful degree program. With a general university entrance qualification or an equivalent credential, you meet the formal admission requirements.
Here's what you'll learn during your studies
In the Bachelor’s program in Civil Engineering, you’ll gradually develop the skills needed to plan and build structures safely, cost-effectively, and sustainably. The program combines foundational knowledge in the natural sciences with technical expertise, digital methods, and economic principles. You’ll gain an understanding of the entire construction process—from planning and design through to construction.
- Designing Structural Systems and Constructing Buildings
You’ll study structural mechanics, structural analysis, and structural design, and learn to calculate and design structural systems for a wide variety of buildings. At the same time, you’ll develop a solid understanding of building materials such as wood, steel, brick, and concrete, as well as their practical applications.
- Managing Construction Projects Cost-Effectively
In addition to technical skills, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge of construction economics, construction management, and project organization. You’ll learn to plan construction processes, use resources efficiently, and implement construction projects in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
- Using digital tools
Digitalization is bringing about lasting change in the construction industry. During your studies, you’ll work with professional software solutions such as AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, REVIT, MATLAB, and Python, and learn to effectively apply digital planning and calculation methods as well as modern technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM) and artificial intelligence.
- Combining Theory and Practice
Project work, lab exercises, field trips, and the professional internship allow you to continuously apply your knowledge to real-world tasks. In this way, you’ll gradually develop the skills required of civil engineers in their future careers.
Further Studies
Upon successful completion of the bachelor’s program, you will meet the requirements for a master’s program in civil engineering at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences or at another university of applied sciences or university. A master’s program opens up additional opportunities for specialization and lays the foundation for leadership positions, the civil engineer certification exam, or a doctoral program.

Jobs & Careers
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering opens up a wide range of career paths in one of Europe’s most important economic sectors. Civil engineers plan, design, and construct buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, and infrastructure projects, and take responsibility for structures that have a lasting impact on our living environments. At the same time, there is a growing demand for professionals who combine technical expertise with business acumen, digitalization, and sustainable solutions.
You can work in these areas
With your bachelor’s degree, numerous career paths are open to you. Depending on your interests, you could work, for example, in planning and engineering firms, construction companies, public institutions, or in the construction industry.
- Planning and Design
You’ll develop structural systems, perform structural analyses, and plan structures in building construction, civil engineering, or infrastructure construction. In doing so, you’ll work closely with architects and other specialized planners.
- Construction Supervision and Project Management
You’ll coordinate construction projects, plan construction processes, manage resources, and ensure that projects are implemented in a technically sound, cost-effective, and timely manner.
- Construction Industry and Public Institutions
Civil engineers are also in demand at building departments, government agencies, and in project controlling. There, you will oversee construction projects, review proposals, or take on tasks in construction and project management.
- Research and Development
New building materials, digital planning methods, and sustainable construction techniques are constantly transforming the industry. Your degree also qualifies you for roles in research and development as well as for innovative construction and infrastructure projects.
Your growth continues
A bachelor’s degree opens up numerous opportunities for academic and professional development. By pursuing a master’s degree, you can specialize, take on leadership roles, or meet the requirements for the civil engineer certification exam and a doctoral program.
