Metschacher Moos: SKS Field Laboratory for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
October 16, 2023
Partnership with the Kärntner Sparkasse Foundation
In the near future, the Metschacher Moos will be available to students and researchers at CU Carinthia University as an experimental and testing site. The Kärntner Sparkasse Foundation (SKS) has acquired the former moorland and is making it available to CU Carinthia University as part of a long-term partnership. The scientific value of the area lies in the existing data series on vegetation development on the former moorland. The data stretches back more than 30 years, meaning that long-term research at this site can now continue.
The 14.6-hectare site offers opportunities to test and further develop technologies for biodiversity monitoring, including as part of the university’s BioDivTecs Hub project. The site is also intended for use by other research and educational institutions, companies and startups. As part of a multilateral collaboration, plans are in place to establish a research infrastructure with international visibility.
