Spotlight on the Capercaillie

October 22, 2025

The project focuses on developing smart conservation strategies for subalpine biodiversity through effective monitoring and management practices.

Since the effectiveness of traditional management methods is generally declining due to limited resources and climate-induced shifts in breeding seasons, new methods must be compared, evaluated, and optimized for large-scale application. The goal of these methods is to enable more precise monitoring of conservation status, ranges, and changes therein. At the same time, they are intended to provide a crucial foundation for species conservation, the identification of potential threats, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of management measures. Our focus is on assessing the potential and conducting a pilot study on the use of passive acoustic monitoring methods as a complement to or further development of traditional approaches.
