Who is this degree program suitable for?
This program is designed for graduates of a technical bachelor's or diploma program who are interested in data analysis, AI, machine learning, and data-driven solutions.
What are the admission requirements?
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s or diploma degree in a technical field from an accredited university. This degree must include at least 10 ECTS credits in computer science and programming, 10 ECTS credits in mathematics, statistics, or algorithms, and 5 ECTS credits in data management, databases, or data structures.
What happens if I don´t have any knowledge of databases?
Students who have already been admitted and are missing ECTS credits in data management, databases, or data structures can earn them by taking a preparatory summer course at CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences.
Do I need programming skills for this degree program?
Yes, basic programming skills are required. In addition, you should have a solid background in mathematics as well as a basic understanding of statistics, databases, and data management.
In what language is the program taught?
The language of instruction for the Master's program in Applied Data Science is English. A minimum B2 level of English proficiency is required for the program.
Is it possible to pursue this degree while working?
Yes, the program is designed to be work-friendly and can be combined with a job. Classes begin on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 4:50 p.m. and on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. In addition, you should plan for about two Saturdays per month and approximately five weekdays per semester for classes.
How long does the program last, and what degree will I receive?
The master’s program lasts four semesters and comprises 120 ECTS credits. It begins each year in October during the winter semester and is offered on the Villach campus. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the academic degree “Master of Science in Engineering” (MSc).
What is Applied Data Science?
Applied data science involves the collection, transmission, storage, processing, analysis, and visualization of large amounts of data. The goal is to extract relevant information from the data and use it to derive well-founded recommendations for action.
What topics are covered in the program?
Among other things, you'll work with data quality, statistics, data engineering, databases, data visualization, machine learning, deep learning, as well as data protection and ethical issues. In the process, you'll gain an understanding of the entire data lifecycle.
What role do AI and machine learning play?
AI and machine learning are central focuses of the program. You will learn about supervised and unsupervised learning methods, as well as artificial neural networks and deep learning, and apply them to analyze large amounts of data.
Is the program practical?
Yes, over the course of several semesters, you'll work on projects that build on one another—from selecting an area of application to developing a concept and finally to practical implementation. Research and collaborations with companies further reinforce the practical relevance of the program.
Are data protection and ethical issues addressed?
Yes, legal and ethical frameworks are part of the program. You’ll explore how data can be processed responsibly and how data-driven and AI-powered solutions can be used safely.

After graduation, you can work as a data scientist or data expert in places such as research institutions, banks, industrial companies, retail and e-commerce firms, Internet and transportation service providers, or in marketing. The degree also qualifies you to pursue doctoral studies.
How much does it cost to attend university?
The standard tuition fee is €363.36 per semester, plus the ÖH fee, which is currently €26.20. For students from third countries outside the EU and the EEA, a tuition fee of €500 per semester will apply starting in the winter semester of 2026.
How can I apply?
Applications are submitted online through the CU Carinthia University of Applied Sciences application portal. There, you will submit the required personal documents as well as proof of your academic background to date.
