Who is the Master's program in Civil Engineering designed for?

The master’s program is designed for graduates of a relevant bachelor’s program as well as prospective students with a related university degree. It is particularly well-suited for anyone who wishes to deepen their expertise in civil engineering and prepare for technical or leadership roles in the construction industry.

What qualifications should I have?

In addition to a relevant bachelor’s degree, technical understanding, analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well in a team are important requirements. You should also be able to consider economic and social contexts and enjoy working in an interdisciplinary manner.

What specializations are available?

In the master's program, you can choose between three areas of specialization:

  • Design and Construction
  • Planning and Execution
  • Construction Process Management (taught in English)

This allows you to tailor your studies specifically to your professional interests.

What role does artificial intelligence play in university?

Artificial intelligence is an integral part of teaching and research. You will learn to apply AI in design and semester projects and to make targeted use of modern technologies for the planning and optimization of structures.

How much of the program consists of practical work and projects?

Practical experience plays a central role in the master’s program. About 33% of the coursework consists of projects in which you tackle real-world challenges and directly apply academic knowledge to professional practice.

Can I work while I'm in school?

Yes. The course schedule is designed so that one day a week is set aside for practical work experience. In addition, blended learning formats and project-based work provide the flexibility needed to successfully balance studies and work.

How practical is the master's program?

You’ll work in the construction lab and in real-world labs, gain experience on construction sites, and deepen your knowledge during field trips to companies such as DOKA or STRABAG. This allows you to combine academic concepts with the real-world challenges of construction practice.

Can I conduct research at the Construction Lab?

Yes. At the Construction Laboratory, you can participate in current research projects or write your master’s thesis in a research setting. You’ll focus on topics such as materials development, building physics, or the reinforcement of existing structures, and you’ll work with professional testing and laboratory equipment.

Is the program also offered in English?

Yes. The master's program is also offered entirely in English under the name Civil Engineering. As a result, the program is designed for both German-speaking and international students.

What career opportunities will this master's degree open up for me?

With a master’s degree, you’ll be qualified for specialized and leadership roles in planning, design, construction management, project management, or research. In addition, the program provides a solid foundation for the master builder or civil engineer certification exam, as well as for pursuing a doctoral degree.

How large are the study groups?

At the start of the program, the cohort size is expected to be about 10 to 15 students. This allows you to benefit from a personalized learning environment and close interaction with faculty and fellow students.

How accessible is Spittal as a university town?

Spittal an der Drau is very easy to reach by both public transportation and car. The campus is located on the ÖBB main line between Salzburg and Graz and is also directly connected to the Tauern Autobahn (A10).

Is there any assistance available for finding an apartment?
