Who is the Master's program in Social Work: Developing and Shaping intended for?

The program is designed for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in social work as well as—depending on their prior education—graduates from related disciplines. What admission requirements do I need to meet?

Is it possible to switch careers?

Yes. The master’s program is also open to graduates of related disciplines. These include, in particular, fields of study in the social and cultural sciences, psychology, pedagogy, educational sciences, social and integration pedagogy, social and health management, public management, and law and political science. 

The basic requirement is a bachelor’s degree in social work or a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline worth 180 ECTS credits.

Can I balance work and school?

Yes. The master's program is designed to be compatible with a career and is also aimed at people who are already working in the social services or healthcare sectors.

What areas of focus can I choose during my studies?

The curriculum includes four elective modules that allow you to tailor your studies to your specific interests. In addition, you will explore topics such as social management, social planning, empirical research, and organizational and legal issues, among others.

What role does practical experience play in university?

A practical focus is a central component of the program. Together with other students, you will develop and carry out a project spanning multiple semesters, gaining experience in planning, implementation, and evaluation.

To what extent can I incorporate my own professional experience into my projects and master's thesis?

Very much so. The master’s program “Social Work: Developing and Shaping” is specifically designed to allow students to incorporate their prior professional and practical experience into their studies. A central component of the curriculum is a practical project that you develop yourself and carry out in a group, which is supported over the course of several semesters. The more practical experience you bring to the program, the more you can incorporate your professional interests, research questions, and networks into your project work and master’s thesis.

What research methods will I learn about?

During your studies, you will explore qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research. You will learn to critically evaluate scientific findings and apply them to the further development of social practice.

Are there any international opportunities?

Yes. Through the double-degree program with the Finnish university JAMK, you can earn a second internationally recognized master’s degree. The program includes, among other things, international study weeks and courses taught in English.

What level of English proficiency do I need for the double degree program?

To participate in the double-degree program, you need a very good command of spoken and written English, as all program components are conducted in English.

What kind of work experience do I need for the double degree program?

To participate in the dual-degree program, you must have at least two years of professional experience in the health care or social services sector after completing your bachelor’s degree or basic training.

In what fields can I work after I graduate?

Among other things, this master’s program qualifies you for leadership and management roles, social planning, organizational development, public administration, and research, as well as careers in the social sector, the healthcare sector, and nonprofit organizations.

Can I pursue a Ph.D. after completing my master's degree?

Yes. Upon successful completion, you will meet the requirements for a doctoral program.

How long does the program take?

The master's program lasts four semesters. During the program, you will deepen your subject-specific expertise and work on your own practical project over the course of several semesters.
