What should you bring to the program?

The Applied Data Science master’s program is designed for graduates of a technical bachelor’s or diploma program who want to analyze and use data responsibly. You should have an analytical mindset and an interest in AI, machine learning, and data-driven solutions. Since the program is taught in English, English proficiency at a minimum B2 level is required.

For admission, your bachelor’s degree must include the following prerequisites:

  • Computer Science / Programming: 10 ECTS
  • Mathematics / Statistics / Algorithms: 10 ECTS
  • Data Management / Databases / Data Structures

Here's what you'll learn during your studies

In the Applied Data Science master’s program, you’ll learn how to manage the entire data lifecycle professionally. You’ll focus on the collection, integration, transfer, processing, and storage of data, as well as its analysis, modeling, visualization, and interpretation. In doing so, you’ll develop a holistic understanding of how data is used responsibly and translated into concrete applications.

The curriculum combines data engineering, data analysis, AI, machine learning, statistics, data management, and applied knowledge. You’ll learn not only to implement data-driven and AI-powered solutions but also to understand their fundamentals, capabilities, and limitations. This will enable you to make informed choices about appropriate methods, critically evaluate results, and responsibly refine applications.

In practice-oriented projects, you’ll work on real-world problems from business, technology, research, and society. You’ll develop data-driven solutions for complex decision-making processes while taking into account data protection as well as legal and ethical frameworks.

Here's how the program is structured

The master’s program lasts four semesters and is worth 120 ECTS credits. The language of instruction is English, and the degree awarded is a “Master of Science in Engineering” (MSc).

The program is designed to be compatible with a full-time job. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 4:50 p.m. and on Fridays starting at 1:30 p.m. In addition, the program includes approximately two Saturdays per month and five weekdays per semester. The program begins in October and is offered on the Villach campus.
